I was watching a bunch of James Baldwin videos last night; it dawned on me how juvenile our national conversations have become & I think this has become compounded by social media. This depressed me heavily. I think I’ll start speaking only about Theory of Enchantment on Twitter.
We are it seems always at each other’s throats with little belief in approaching each other with a spirit of generosity; I think this is a reflection of a lack of generosity we have for ourselves and a failure to wrestle with our own mortality.
As a result we are fickle and cheap with the arrows we sling at each other, making idols out of our opinions as if this will make us immortal beings; we fail to realize that a liberal education’s purpose is to learn how to die — which will in turn teach us how to live.
Our great America is, I believe, enduring a great identity crisis. I do not know if we will survive it but that we only can survive it if we rededicate ourselves to that enterprise known as Love - and that is the hardest endeavor of our species.
