How bad were Tuesday's primary elections for the fate of democracy?

Really bad.

1. Maine Gov: Paul LePage won the GOP nomination for Governor after saying that 2020 was "clearly a stolen election."

2. ME-02: Bruce Poliquin is the GOP nominee after urging Trump not to concede in 2020 & refusing to say unequivocally that Biden won.

3. Nevada Gov: Trump-endorsed Joe Lombardo won the GOP nod after questioning whether Biden won "fair and square."

4. Nevada Secretary of State: GOP nominee Jim Marchant is an EXTREME election denier who says he would not have certified the 2020 results if he'd been SoS.

5. Nevada - US Senate: Adam Laxalt has been dubbed the "Nevada version of Rudy Giuliani". Enough said.

I need me some Jan 6 leaks. That would be a great way to end a terrible week.

January 3rd Peter Navarro says all the things. Hey @tedcruz where's your commission? What happened?
"The most important people are you. You're more important than the courts. You're more important than anything b/c courts keep referring to you & you're the ones that are going to make the decision,” he said in a 14-min call into a 2-hour session organized by Got Freedom.
Several leaders of #StopTheSteal were on the call, organized by Phill Kline who also heads the Amistad Project of the nonpartisan Thomas Moore Society. Others incl: Rudy Giuliani, John Eastman, Peter Navarro & John Lott Jr, a ➡️ Justice Department official ⬅️

#SeditionHunters - NYT reports that a panicked Alex Jones (facing crippling lawsuits from Sandy Hook families and an increasingly aggressive Jan 6 investigation), is now offering DOJ full cooperation if they promise not to prosecute him... 1/…
Jones will have to get more honest to make a deal worthwhile. He played a major role not only leading up to Jan 6, but on the day: he led a crowd to the Capitol, then steered them around the building to help build the crowd for the East-side breaches. 2/
Alex Jones is tied not just to the Jan 6 propagandists but to the attackers. Alex moved all day with Ali Alexander, leader of #StopTheSteal. And the attack itself was led by ... Alex's former employee Joe Biggs, InfoWars "reporter" turned Proud Boy. 3/

So some interesting things have surfaced in the last few weeks that I want to share. Be patient with me, I’m slow & get interrupted a lot. But, I think it’s worth it to share this information before the mid-term elections.

😃 Please don’t forget to vote in November…💙
This article from 04/06/2022 has been weighing on my mind…it’s regarding the #RockbridgeNetwork, defined as a coalition.

What is a “political coalition” in the US?
Not much. It’s basically a verbal, non-regulated agreement to finance an agreed upon political agenda.
While #RockbridgeNetwork is being considered a “new GOP coalition”, it isn’t, think #CambridgeAnalytica. Plus, it is not the only “new GOP coalition” popping up before mid-term elections. #ChestnutStreetCouncil has been started by Matt Schlapp, think #KochNetwork

@MacFarlaneNews Following the Capitol invasion, organization Documented reported audio it had obtained of a robocall message sent out by RLDF the day before the attack, encouraging people to turn out for the march. Archived copies “March To Save America” website also point to RLDF’s involvement.
@MacFarlaneNews “I’m calling for the Rule of Law Defense Fund with an important message,” the call started, before describing plans for the crowd to march from a park near the White House to the Capitol  at 1 p.m. to “call on Congress to stop the steal.”
@MacFarlaneNews “We are hoping patriots like you will join us to continue to fight to protect the integrity of our elections,“ the message continued. It then promoted the march’s website, before ending with a reminder that the call was “paid for and authorized by the Rule of Law Defense Fund.”

#SeditionHunters - the Jan 6 Capitol attack required a crowd. A new timeline of the people who brought that crowd shows: the building blocks for Jan 6 were laid early, before the election. But the attack itself - in some form - was green-lit late, on the night of Dec. 18. 1/
A year’s work showed us the pipeline of #SeditionVIPs who streamed from rallies to Capitol grounds. Collecting a year’s notes into one timeline (and adding a 1500-page FOIA) makes the path to Jan 6 more clear. Read thread for a walkthrough - it’s a lot. 2/…
We focused on about 50 VIPs associated with rallies and crowd-building propaganda - maybe a quarter of the public figures at the Capitol on Jan 6. This walkthrough sticks to 2020, but the timeline includes their origins & back-stories... 3/

#WildProtest: the protest that never was.

The day Trump tweeted his call for Jan 6 to "be wild", Ali Alexander registered WildProtest[.]com.

It was to be held on Lot 8 on Capitol grounds.

It never actually happened. Instead, it was used as bait.…
To write this piece I looked at website registrations and web archives. Knitted that together with reporting from @propublica, @BuzzFeedNews, @emptywheel, @just_security and @capitolhunters into a single narrative centered on #WildProtest, the protest that never was.
@propublica @BuzzFeedNews @emptywheel @just_security @capitolhunters For weeks before Jan 6, Ali's #StopTheSteal protests outside government bldgs had brought together militants, conspiracy theorists (Alex Jones) & white supremacists. There were stabbings and capitol invasions.
Along the way they lied and lied and lied.…

Alexander claimed he planned to revamp Nov 2018 effort called “Stop the Steal” & create digital text-msg database to dispatch trump supporters to places where ballots are being counted & offices of state election officials if their “physical presence is needed.”
“In the next coming days, we’re going to build infrastructure to stop the steal,” Alexander said. “What we're going to do is bypass all of social media. We will launch an effort concentrating on the swing states & map out where votes are being counted & secretary of states.

The Lesson of January 6: Zero-Sum Racism is the Biggest Threat to U.S. Democracy.…
By tracking the hundreds of insurrectionists who have been arrested over the past year, researchers from @UChicago were able to conclude that the rioters’ primary driver was “fear of the ‘great replacement’, the belief that the rights of minorities will overtake that of whites.”
Despite universal condemnation in Washington during the violent siege, on the next day, the majority of the House #Republican caucus voted to do what the mob wanted: refuse to certify the election results.

“There are 2 stories of the radicalization of the pro-Trump wing of the [GOP].” One is “slower moving & arguably starts during the 1990s…” The other “begins on 9/7/20, when polling [showed] that Trump’s path to reelection faced significant challenges.” 1/…
“Far-right influencers such as Jack Posobiec and Ali Alexander used right-tilting social media giant Twitter to start pushing the five-year-old Roger Stone-inspired hashtag #StoptheSteal.” 2/

Come to Washington, Trump tweeted to his supporters on the Saturday before Christmas, issuing a clarion call for them to gather and protest on Jan. 6: “Be there, will be wild!”
His supporters immediately responded on the pro-Trump forum under a thread titled “TRUMP TWEET. DADDY SAYS BE IN DC ON JAN. 6.”

"[W]e have a very old word for persuasive communication with an agenda: propaganda. That term, however, comes with historical baggage. It presumes that governments, authority figures, institutions, and mass media are forcing ideas on regular people from the top down.
"But more and more, the opposite is happening. Far from being merely a target, the public has become an active participant in creating and selectively amplifying narratives that shape realities.
"Perhaps the best word for this emergent bottom-up dynamic is one that doesn’t exist quite yet: ampliganda, the shaping of perception through amplification."

[I am not a fan of this term. I'm eager to find something catchier that accomplishes the same thing.]

For many years, I've concentrated my social media presence on Facebook, due to its vastly improved engagement with my 3,000 personal followers, plus an additional 3,000 or so followers on @RadicalSecular page.
For those of you who may not know me well, The Radical Secular is a weekly podcast I began producing in June of 2020 with my partners @ChristopheDifo, @Joe_Occhipinti, and Drew Scott.
Twitter's always been a poorer cousin of FB as a social network, for those of us who aren't already household names. It's slow work to build up a following. Twitter's feed can't compete with the immediate response from an FB profile, political page, or group.

🚨First interview with @wsj’s Facebook whistleblower tonight on @60Minutes tonight🚨

A BIG deal. The total failure to hold Facebook to account after Cambridge Analytica is coming home to roost.

How many more insurrections have to happen before we do?

Facebook is out running interference ahead of interview. Nick Clegg is on manoeuvres. Because this is serious.

So many civil society groups - including & esp @FBoversight - were involved in strenuous attempts to get FB to take action ahead of US election…
The point is that so many academics, experts, civil rights groups were warning of exactly this.

The insurrection wasn’t some sort of black swan event impossible to predict. Facebook’s failure to take essential measures to protect against violence was pointed out *repeatedly*
