Like if you watch James Baldwin debate Buckley you can see him intellectually demolish the fucking guy to the extent that all he was left with was the editorship of the National Review and lifelong acclaim from his crypto-fascist peers
And it’s all very well to go back and say, truly, wow, Baldwin is so much smarter than him and has this immense dignity
But the lesson I learned was just to laugh in these people’s faces
