Spoiler alert: There's zero chance it was.

Finding myself wondering if the reaction to ROMA would be the same had it been directed by Alejandra Cuaron.

It would deserve it, but would it?
For the record, I am almost certain the answer is no, and that realization deeply disturbs me.
That shouldn’t take anything away from Cuaron or his film. It is - as many have said - a masterpiece. And it presents its characters with the love, affection, and humanity you’d expect given his relationship with them.

This is the fundamental genius of Putin’s entire enterprise: Unwinding his now considerable influence over the American government requires Americans - and the political right in particular - to admit that they got beat, and taking the L is almost constitutionally unamerican.
And it is PARTICULARLY difficult for the right, much of whose political identity is founded on the idea of America as a perfect nation.
Those of us who know America’s imperfect history and have had to fight to participate in its full promise are far more dispositionally willing to acknowledge a national L when it happens and make changes so that it doesn’t happen again.

But that she didn't need my help, that all she had to do was keep doing what she was doing...
& that has proved to be true. She's never needed my help. If anything I've leaned on her far more than she has ever asked me for anything...

My life is an example of starting from absolute zero and getting to decent across an array of skills. Many times it’s been 20 years in the making.

Sharing this megathread not to brag but hopefully as an example that you too can make the choice to improve at things you’re bad at.
PUBLIC SPEAKING

I was cripplingly shy as a kid. In the 8th grade I had to give a speech. I did the whole thing with my notes literally held covering my face at eye level so I wouldn’t have to see anyone.
In college I went through entire semester-long seminars without speaking once (among a round table class of 12 students).

First couple times speaking as a founder I was incredibly nervous. I gave a lightning talk at Web 2.0 in 2007 and had to get drunk to calm my nerves.

Ooh baby let’s break some of this down. What affirmative action and diversity & inclusion programs (flawed as some were/are) reveal is the lie of American #meritocracy & #bootstrapism.
Affirmative action & diversity programs have repeatedly sought out women, people of color & increasingly queer & disabled people for opportunities for which they are qualified. These programs consider experiences of oppression an important perspective these folks bring.
Further, when these programs occur in early education settings smart, creative & otherwise talented marginalized kids get to have their interests & skills nurtured in ways their families may not be able to provide either financially or bc of lack of awareness of such programs.

I'm a sociologist who studies adolescent sexual violence. On this thread, I will be live tweeting the #Kavanaugh hearing, chiming in with sociological insights and research findings.
Full disclosure--I will probably step away for parts of it. While many conservatives have cast feminists as people who rejoice at allegations of sexual assault against powerful men, this is a painful process for us. We know survivors. We are survivors. And I will need breaks.
It does not bode well that the beginning of this hearing is starting with equating #Kavanaugh and #Ford's experiences with harassment following Dr. Ford's allegations. They are absolutely not the same.
