On meritocracy:
Horatio Alger never wrote about pulling yourself up by the bootstraps. The children’s books he wrote obsessively involved a wealthy older benefactor lifting a deserving boy up by the bootstraps.

Since this phrase pops up whenever the subject turns to meritocracy, I thought a history and literature lesson may be in order.
