#Christchurch 2/5 Pope John Paul was addressing the murder of St. Oscar Romero, whose martyrdom we will commemorate later this month. His words seem to apply to the barbaric attack in New Zealand, also an attack on a house of worship. They make us ask again, “Where are we going”
#Christchurch 3/5 Perhaps the most providential thing about this attack on our Muslim brothers and sisters is that it took place in a name called "ChristChurch," to help us see it not just as an attack on a Mosque, but an attack against the sacred, indeed, an attack against God.
#Christchurch 4/5 If we cannot recognize this as an attack on God, we have not heeded St John Paul, who said that “all forms of terrorism ... violate goodness, justice and the law and, what is more, offend the Gospel and its message of love, solidarity and brotherhood in Christ.”
#Christchurch 5/5 And so, on this Friday of Lent, in this Month of Martyrs, ancient ones like Sts Felicitas and Perpetua; modern ones like St Oscar Romero, let us pause and reflect: “Where, where is the world going? ... Where are we going?” And what are we doing to stem the hate?
