The converse of the fallacy described below is when we progressives (sometimes) sound as though we are criticizing the concept of meritocracy itself, rather than the false projection of “meritocracy” onto a caste system of white male entitlement.
Caste systems co-existed with the rise of constitutional democratic self-governance - and that rise was not so long ago in proportion to the rest of despotic history.

But caste systems inherently undermine democracy.
Every time a democratic government has fallen, or nearly so, its failure to dismantle caste systems of race, gender and religion has been a foundational factor.
Even true of the original Greco-Roman models our founders admired and sought to emulate.
