In regards to that "college entrance cheating scandal", I want to point out that the vast majority of elite members of our community either didn't get into an elite school or didn't go college all. (I went to the state school)
A lot of our 'liteness comes from thinking outside the box. It's the same lack of conformity that makes it difficult to attend an elite school that makes us visionaries.
We are in a new field that requires self-starters who can study and learn on their own. That's not a skill you learned in conforming to requirements to get into an elite school: yes it's hard work, but directed by others instead of being able to decide for yourself.
So I'm not too upset about parents cheating to get their kids into elite schools. While it gives them a bit of prestige, I don't think it's all that useful to them for future success. Statistically, it seems "prestige" is really all elite schools give students.
