So I'm reading the @DevinNunes butthurt lawsuit.
BTW, calling somebody a "treasonous cowpoke" is not defamation, even if it weren't true.
I'm not sure if the @DevinCow misleads or confuses anybody into believing it's actually Devin's Cow. If you feel mislead by this, please respond to this tweet so I know that such people exist.
Though to be fair, the lawsuit does bring up an important point that we continue to debate in other contexts, such as whether Trump infringes on a person's free speech when he blocks somebody on Twitter.

1/ Boeing is shipping a software patch for the MCAS system implicated in the two 737 MAX crashes. Many people are calling the problem a "software bug". This is incorrect. It's a design flaw, not software flaw.
2/ I mention this because there people who want the government to regulate software bugs/vulns. They cite disasters where software is involved to justify their desire to regulate. However, much of the time, a software bug/vuln isn't at fault.
3/ Such is the case here. The software is behaving exactly as design. However, the design was to rely upon a single sensor to control the tail fins, and if that sensor was faulty, to cause the plane to dive.

It's important to note in this "Facebook plain-text password" story that the passwords are being stored with salted scrypt hashes, that's not the issue. Instead, the issue is inadvertent logging of web requests -- which happen to contain clear-text passwords.
2/ The analogy is that Facebook has all the proper locks on the doors -- but somebody left the window open.
3/ It's a common problem that all companies have. It should be one of the first things you audit in your security architecture. Don't simply verify passwords are hashed, also verify with the web team that they don't get logged along with all the other web input.

1/ Georgia Power (the state power company) offers a billing plan for Electric Vehicles that offers insanely low price of $0.014/kWh for off-off-peak charging from 11pm to 7am. Only it's not, that's ignoring surcharges of around $0.031/kWh
2/ So it's effectively 4.6-cents per kWh instead of the advertised 1.4-cents, which is still a good deal, just not as good a deal as advertised. For comparison, flat rate pricing is around 11-cents (combined).
3/ I mention this because of the Venezuelan power blackout, which they (probably falsely) blame on cyberattack. Our response to cyber threat to the power grid shouldn't be a secure power grid, but a decentralized one.

1. "Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House" by Michael Wolff. Yes, I hate-read this book in a matter of days. Problematically, Bannon comes across as an articulate, insightful source and not an arch nationalist parasite. Will Wolff's depiction be hagiography in the future?
2. "The Invention of the White Race, Volume 1: Racial Oppression and Social Control" and "The Invention of the White Race, Volume 2: The Origin of Racial Oppression in Anglo-America" by Theodore Allen. Who knew how important Bacon's Rebellion (1676) was to the history of racism?

In the 70's "Woodstein" went after the Nixon admin with unshakeable perseverance, using all the tools of investigative journalism available. Today, they rail against Trump, pushing narratives that are so shoddy that they've become caricatures of the journalists they once were....
And as if that weren't bad enough, they consciously ignore huge developing stories on the scale of Watergate, or worse, and aggressively attempt to discredit those who are desperately trying to get at the truth...i.e.#DevinNunes

THREAD: there is no one way to be a writer, no one way to tell a story, no one way to do this thing we do as a hobby or as a job or as an art form. Some write a little every day, in an office; some write a lot at one time at varying, sporadic points. It's all okay.
I think it's important to challenge all pieces of "Known Writing Advice," all those chestnuts of Vital Lore, and to see what they are and what works for you. We all have our own weird fingerprints to imprint upon this thing we do.
I think it IS important to talk about the things you do and the processes you use to write and tell a story and to hold them up and examine them -- share them with others, and listen to their ways of doing things, too.

Even though my dream came true last Tuesday, I'm an introvert prone to anxiety and have been so grateful for the support of my dear circle during this crazy time! Some things my friends have done for me that I will try to remember to do for others during their big life moments:
1. Start texts and emails with “No need to respond to this” or “This isn’t urgent.” Just a nice little thing to add that takes off some (self-induced) pressure.
2. Send gifts to a hotel room! WHY didn’t I know about this amazing friendship trick!!?! After returning to my hotel from my event in DC, one friend had sent a cocktail and another sent desserts. It made me feel SO celebrated. I now want to do it for everyone, even strangers!
