Women report high levels of discrimination in the profession. Half of the female respondents said they effectively mute their voices to avoid harassment. 3/
Men recognize this discrimination exists, but at a far lower rate than women. And a majority of men say econ would be a stronger field if it was more diverse. But... 4/
There is a backlash from a non-trivial subset of men in economics. 10% say the AEA should not spend much effort on diversity efforts. 12% of men say that men are NOT respected in economics. 5/

The results have spurred immediate action by the AEA, including a new anti-harassment code and sanctions for those who violate the AEA code of conduct, including being ineligible for big awards like the Clark Medal.

I hear a decent amount from men who say, "There's no real gender problem in economics." I'd be interested in hearing their reaction to this data -- after all, economists are supposed to respond to data. /fin
