Five years ago, when I was hiring for what would become Storyline (RIP) at WaPo, a young reporter at an alt-weekly in LA emailed me to apply for a job. She told me something to the effect of, "I just love telling stories so damn much."

In honor of the now-departed @Wonkblog (RIP), a brief wonk-thread about economic projections, tax cuts and two rapidly diverging theories of the economy. Also, the Trump re-elect. 1/
Last year, after the passage of President Trump's signature tax cuts -- and a bipartisan bill to boost defense and other fed spending -- the White House projected 3.1% growth for 2018. @USCBO projected 3.3%. We don't have final numbers yet, but it's looks like they were ~right 2/
@USCBO The similarity of the projections hid the very different way the forecasters view the US economy.

CBO sees a baseline long run growth rate of ~1.7%, boosted last yr by fiscal stimulus

WH sees a higher baseline, further boosted by supply-side effects of tax cuts/deregulation 3/

This is a chart of Q1 tax revenues (personal+corp+payroll) by fiscal year. Not adjusted for inflation.

FY 2019 is the first period when the Trump tax cuts were fully in effect.

No, the cuts aren't "paying for themselves."
Allow me one more chart on this.
We now know the full extent of tax receipts for calendar year 2018, the first year the Trump Tax Cuts were fully in place.

Receipts FELL by 1 percent, even though economic growth accelerated.

Yellen says “the aggressiveness of the profession, as exemplified in seminars, is something that discourages women from going into the field...it’s something we need to work hard to change.”
“Aggressiveness” — a word this panel keeps bringing up — is more or less a polite way of saying, male economists being assholes to women.
Make no mistake: There’s a lot of that in Econ.

Five years ago, we had a fair significant bit of building work done to our home. It took us 10 years to get the mortgage to a place where we could borrow against it to transform the ground floor of our home into a bigger, open place living space.
It was the first time my husband & I had engaged builders. It felt terrifying, exciting & very grown up. We met & got quotes from 5 companies. We went with a Polish firm. Not the cheapest, but the most professional. Friends said “go with your gut”. We did.
The work took three months. We got to know our builders well in that time. They did an outstanding job. On time. On budget. Great taste & sound advise. But, you know, we were glad when it was finally over and we got our home back.

1️⃣ Five years ago, I suggested systematically Sokaling all peer-reviewed journals. To “Sokal” is, hereby, to attempt to publish clearly bogus papers to illustrate the brokenness of the academic publication process.

2️⃣ Today @HPluckrose, @ConceptualJames & @peterboghossian reported on the first multiple-Sokaling. They were successful in publishing nonsense in top-ranked journals (which comes as no surprise, but is great to have verified).

3️⃣ I had in mind a more ambitious project. Pointing out that “grievance studies” fields are mostly nonsense is shooting fish in a barrel. We know that, for instance, “cognitive neuroscience” is also largely bollocks: biorxiv.org/content/early/…

Five years ago, pro-Israel activists in an audience misinterpret a speech by the Palestinian Ambassador. Corbyn jokes that even though they lived in England all their lives, they had less understanding of English irony than the Palestinian Ambassador. What's the problem?

Five years ago today, two bombs exploded near the finish line of the Boston Marathon. Three people died, and hundreds were injured. Later that week, all hell broke loose in the Boston area. We still don't know who built the bombs.
In 2015, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was found guilty of bombing the marathon and killing an MIT police officer. He was sentenced to death. The FBI seems to have moved on. But key facts in the case are missing. This is a thread about the loose ends.
The bombings happened on Marathon Monday, April 15, 2013, at around 2:50pm. For days, the government wouldn't say anything about whether it had suspects. Then, on Thursday April 18, at around 5:20pm, the FBI released photos of its suspects.

I think the fact that they put this "argument" in the mouth of Lisa's character, the character who usually champions the underdogs and is supposed to be the most thoughtful and liberal, is what makes this the most ridiculous (as in worthy of ridicule) and toothless response.
My friend @harikondabolu made a beautiful & powerful film. It took guts to do it. He knew he was going after a sacred cow. (Pun intended.) He knew many people would just watch the trailer or see the poster or just hear the title & immediately just hate on it & him.
