1. How on earth, in an age where one can make a living as a "social media influencer" can people refuse to understand the distinction between influencing something and bearing responsibility for it?
2. Of all people, Donald Trump richly understands how the media shapes people's perceptions of reality and patterns of behavior. There's a reason why people pay lots of money for advertisements.
3. Is some ad executive *responsible* for me buying one brand of soap rather than another? Of course not. Would I have bought a different brand of soap if I hadn't seen that ad? Probably yes.
4. Soap is just an innocuous example to communicate what any grownup living in the 21st century should understand. The public utterances and actions of influential people...influence people. Duh.
5. No one is saying that Donald Trump is responsible for the actions of that shooter. But if you think there's zero connection between an act of Islamophobic violence and the anti-Islamic rhetoric used by the world's most powerful person, then you're just being obtuse.
