so there was a lot of rain this weekend and my wife and i were worried because there were indications that water was pooling on the roof. it became my job to go to the roof and investigate.
i couldn't do that, though, because apparently someone tried to break in through the hatch on the roof. they didn't get in but they did bend the slide-bolt badly enough that i also couldn't get out.
my next-door neighbor also couldn't get to her roof because the last contractor to seal their roof also decided to tar their roof-hatch shut but i eventually did find a neighbor who had roof access i could use

Holy cow. Sullivan got a federal simple possession charge tossed because he was rich and famous and his citizenship application was pending. Now he wants a wall.
The judge published an opinion just to call out the U.S. Attorney for cronyism and appears to have named Sullivan's attorney just to imply that it was money that led to lenience.
The Court was not pleased at the preferential treatment and had no choice but didn't comply quietly.

BTW, this isn't about declining enrollment in traditional 'humanities' majors. I mean something different.
A historian tasked with describing the contours of American intellectual history, years 2000-2020 inclusive, would likely focus on the rise and then dominance of two cultures of thinking, investigating, and presenting, each endowed with enormous cultural prestige.
The first is the 'discourse of data.' It's intellectual roots lie in cybernetics, game theory, systems thinking, and evolutionary biology. In terms of academic tribes, I suppose it's public intellectuals most often hail from psychology, cognitive science, and economics.

My friend @JamesClear touches on arguably the most important tenet of modern society -- seeking freedom as a proxy for, or means to, happiness. His articulation is spot on. There are some additional nuances around the subject that I’ve found are worth exploring. Here goes...
Complete, unadulterated freedom sounds wonderful. No constraints, no rules, no obligations. The freedom to do whatever I want, whenever I want, wherever I want. Combines the freedom from any restraint with the freedom to pursue my heart’s desires. My life. My choices. My values.

1. New York magazine did us all a great service Tuesday by publishing a story about 12 young Americans who are probably not going to vote next week. The piece is a riot of sorry excuses for craven irresponsibility, but it’s no less illuminating because of it.
2. The piece suggests that our sociopolitical ills did not start and will not stop with the current president. The article suggests that our problems begin and end with us. nymag.com/intelligencer/…
3. It’s now finally getting traction empirically: those who did not vote in the 2016 election are most responsible for Donald Trump’s rise to power. This is because some 40 percent of eligible voters didn’t vote.

(THREAD) MAJOR BREAKING NEWS: Mike Flynn will plead guilty to Making False Statements at 10:30 AM EST today (Friday). This is the biggest development in the Russia probe so far. This thread explains what it all means, and will be updated throughout the day. Please read and share.
1/ First, it's important to understand that Mueller has entered into a plea deal with Flynn in which Flynn pleads guilty to far less than the available evidence suggests he could be charged with. This indicates that he has cut a deal with Mueller to cooperate in the Russia probe.
2/ We've already seen Mueller do this once before in the probe, with George Papadopoulos—who was charged with the same crime as Flynn, Making False Statements, to secure his cooperation with the Russia probe. The Papadopoulos plea affidavit emphasized facts were being left out.
