In a recent Binghamton University Study, researchers found that the majority of men surveyed confused sexual interest with consent, regardless of the situation. Even if a woman has said no, whether verbally or physically, that she was not interested in engaging in sex.
Research also showed two instances when men are more likely to assume that a woman has consented: 1) if they had engaged in sex in the past, or 2) if the woman’s consent is ambiguous - that is, if she says nothing. (We know that’s why you don’t ask) journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.117…
Consent is not complicated and easy to teach. If we did so regularly, confusion - whether feigned or otherwise - would be addressed, and men could be held accountable rather than routinely claiming they thought she wanted it. (You don’t have to be a mind reader if you just ask)
