It's warming up, which means bugs and critter photos! Rescued this handsome lady Phiddipus audax (Bold Jumping Spider) from the bathroom. She probably overwintered in my indoor plants, and is now happily munching bugs in the garden. Definitely at least a full year old.
When young, they have orange/rusty markings, that fade to white as they age. Females get bigger than males, up to the 3/4" that this one was. The Phiddipus genus is known for being larger, and having the lovely metallic chelicerae you can see, in her case, green.
They tend to like the broadleaf plants, I think she was living in my clivia this winter. In my yard they are especially fond of the butterfly weed/milkweed though I also find them in my beans and tomatoes.

They spin webs only as anchor lines and to protect their eggs.

Last week, the 9-banded armadillo went up against & suffered no injuries due to the sifaka during its nice vacation to Madagascar.

The streaked tenrec also suffered no injuries (other than to its pride) against its battle with the markhor. #2019MMM
The tenrec is now transported from the rocky ledge in cold northeast Afghanistan to a patch of scrubland in the much milder state of Texas, where our armadillo is just leaving his burrow & where tonight's battle takes place! #2019MMM

About a month ago I was trying to learn about the role of imperial countries in African wars and accidentally came across these two bits mentioning the WWF. Then I realized it was a LaRouche publication and was like 🙄 but now...
I guess the fact that it gets some funding from USAID, the world bank, and the department for international development and that its presidents have been European royalty should have been suspect
I mean not that you should listen to LaRouche people, but that there might be imperial factors at work here

Among all the kinds of burials that archaeologists encounter, there is one that seems to be localised to northern Europe - very possibly because of a unique landscape feature found there. That is to say, peat bogs, consisting of dead wetland vegetation & moss. Yum. /2
There’s very little that we can say we truly know about the Bronze and Iron Age cultures of Europe, but we can reasonably be assured that they considered bogs to be either sacred or special - a ‘liminal space’, if you want to get all wanky about it, somewhere ‘between worlds’. /3
