NEW: @LegalAidNYC attorneys asked a federal judge to pause their clients' removal proceedings until deciding what penalty the government should face for illegally undermining a program meant to protect young immigrants abused, abandoned or neglected in their birth countries.
This is the case over the Special Immigrant Juvenile program, enacted in Congress in 1990.

Here's my old @CourthouseNews story from February on the Trump admin's policy change. courthousenews.com/us-faces-judic…

Since that time, a judge ruled the switch illegal. documentcloud.org/documents/5771…
The parties are now arguing over what relief the federal judge should issue.

The Legal Aid attorneys want to make sure their clients don't face adverse consequences before U.S. District Judge John Koeltl issues his final judgment.
"This is not a hypothetical situation," attorney Robert Malionek notes in his letter.

He told me over the phone that at least one faces proceedings next week.

Referring to his clients generally, he added: "Many of them are in danger of removal at any time."
The one curveball here:

The letter acknowledges that there are "no guarantees" the government can prevent this, and the Legal Aid attorneys want DHS to consent to temporarily pausing the proceedings.

And they make that request in a public letter to a federal judge.
UPDATE:

"ICE cannot agree to provide a blanket consent," SDNY says.

That means young immigrants who won a ruling finding the Trump admin's policy change illegal in danger of deportation before they receive a judge's relief.

There's one silver lining here. (See next tweet.)
Promising a "case-by-case" review, SDNY said ICE is looking in to the case of one young immigrant whose hearing is scheduled for April 3 and will decide before then whether to put the proceeding on hold.
