I do not understand what DUP thinks the end game is. But then, I haven't understood what DUP thought their endgame was for the last 30 years.
I mean, let's run the tape here: if your intransigence brings down May without triggering a general election, you are likely to end up with someone more Brexitish than May.
Meanwhile, if your intransigence brings down May and DOES trigger a general election, the most likely outcomes are two:
1) Conservatives return with slightly more MPs, and more eurosceptic MPs, in which case they don't need you, and will by this point be so mad that they may joyfully toss the Northern Irish protestants to the wolves
2) Labour takes the helm, in which case you also lose all leverage.
It is a very strange day indeed when an Irish Catholic whose ancestors hailed from Armagh is wistfully wondering why Northern Ireland no longer has wise statesmen like Ian Paisley to shepherd the party through this moment of crisis, but this is where the modern DUP has left me.
