Honestly I always believed this was a distraction/stunt. Everything is PR & staging in this administration, for this narcissist. He can’t get anything actually done legislatively so he creates crises to “solve” & be the “hero” 🙄
And honestly, there are so many ways this administration is doing serious long term damage to disabled communities. Special Olympics does good work but it IS a private org. We need funding for education, work training programs, healthcare & accessible infrastructure.

I am going up for tenure next year & preparing my materials. There is a book chapter I was invited to write in Fall 2014 just months after I got my PhD. I submitted the chapter in Spring 2015. The edited collection this chapter was written for has still not been published.
I am sure there are decent reasons for the immense slowdown in production. But can you imagine if I was relying on this publication as a junior scholar? I write this piece less than a year after graduating & will likely have tenure before its published. That’s bananas.
As someone working in disability studies I know there was many reasons for delays in schedules, but as a multiply marginalized junior scholar I also know that one publication coming in YEARS late could really fuck with someone’s tenure case.

Read the midterm evaluations for my GWS 101 large lecture course. A little over 1/3 of the students filled out the evaluation online. Average rating of 4.5 out of 5. Vast majority of the comments positive. Best one: “Basically this course makes you a better human.” 🙃
I’ve been struggling with the fact that I put SO MUCH TIME into this class but I am very disconnected from the students & their learning experience since I only lecture while TAs lead discussions & grade. Sometimes it feels like shouting into the abyss & hoping someone heard.
These evals help remind me students are indeed learning & benefitting from the class, even though I don’t really get to see it. A nice gift as we push through the last five weeks of the hardest/busiest semester I’ve had in years.

+ i do owe my friend to be there by her side at 4 am trying to make her understand a political concept for an exam because she was there for me when i had a panic attack in a bathroom cubicle in school . we will always owe people things in life because we love them & we need them
i hate this 'you don't owe people anything' mindset it's like saying it's alright to not give a fuck & be an asshole just because you can . we're humans, we rely on interactions to grow as individuals & our relationships with each other matter a lot
