"How Rupert Murdoch's Empire of Influence Remade the World." This is uncommonly good. I recommend that you read it. nytimes.com/interactive/20… Particularly on how leveraging press power into political muscle led to the enlargement of Murdoch's empire, which then led to more power.
This is a good sentence re: how Murdoch did it. "He quickly expanded the business into a national and then an international force, in part by ruthlessly using his platform to help elect his preferred candidates and then ruthlessly using those candidates to help extend his reach."
One small complaint. About the launch of Fox News, the authors call it "a round-the-clock network with a virtual monopoly on conservative TV news." Here, you have to add that it was conservative news that did not describe itself as such. Instead, it trolled. "Fair and balanced."
Second small point. This ran in the New York Times magazine, which has different style guidelines from the news section. In the magazine it's "Murdoch," not "Mr. Murdoch." Tiny change but it gives the story a different feel, as if the authors had a freedom to be less deferential.
