OK guys so I don't want to sound like a broken record here but honestly I'll bet a full steak dinner against a grilled cheese sandwich that the administration is going to push for land mines at the border. #LandMines2020 ^@soledadobrien
@soledadobrien And when I say Trump (Miller) are gonna put land mines at the border, I'm actually thinking of defense tech like "non-lethal" "land mines" like those manufactured by Taser and marketed to the Border Patrol. Background/examples:

Just watched "April 9th" (Hulu), about the bicycle troops who were the first line of resistance against the Nazi invasion of Denmark in WW2. Ends with actual survivors' reminiscences. Understated and moving. Recommend.
Now I'm watching "Flight of the Intruder" (yes, my wife is away. yes, I'm still in my bathrobe), and remembering my father -- a flight surgeon, ffs -- did night carrier landings and flew covert missions over Laos that we never learned about til after he died, bec.: classified.
(And yes, I have imbibed bourbon. At 2:30 p.m. Grow up. It's the weekend.)

This is fascinating, because Pulaski's intersex nature may be part of WHY he was a great (if flawed) general: intersex as asset, not deformity. The researchers posit he had congenital adrenal hyperplasia, which inter alia causes both ambiguous genitalia and low cortisol levels...
Cortisol makes us experience the "fight or flight" response; theoretically, extremely low cortisol may make one calmer (but also more foolhardy) on the battlefield. Research also shows that people with low cortisol often are more aggressive, and may have behavioral problems...
So I read Pulaski's bio on WP, and found: yep, aggressive, impulsive, but fearless:

So Casimir Pulaski's intersex condition may also be much of what made him (his preferred pronoun) the hero he was.

Condition ≠ "disability." We simply are who we are.

After the whole saga with @TVOvermind ripping off one of our posts yesterday, I started poking around there and have yet to find a single post that links to any sources. Which is weird because they aggregate a lot of news.
I also have been trying really hard to find the writer of their version of our Hans Moleman piece, who has pumped out five other articles, over 4k words, no links in any of them, since yesterday.
Look, I can’t conclusively prove that this writer isn’t a real person, but I consider myself a pretty good googler and have found no proof that he actually exists yet

A few notes about the authors on this paper
Curtis S. Dunkel was an author on a 2017 paper claiming that general intelligence (g) is correlated to brain size and that men are smarter because they have bigger brains
They took 5 brain measurements and 3 of those measurements correlated between 0.1 and 0.3 with g. The other 2 measures, even lower. From this, they concluded that big brains = men are smart, a statement that was discredited decades ago.

There was a brief discussion on the meaning of the term "Middle Ages" on BBC Radio 4 earlier today (Making History - bbc.co.uk/programmes/m00…). Overall a bit dismissive of the idea that the phrase could be applied meaningfully outside of Europe.
But... why? I don't want to sound like a broken record here, but Afro-Eurasia was a huge interconnected space in the Middle Ages. And we don't have a better term to cover that period - "medieval" and "Middle Ages" will do. They're as content-free as we're going to get.
Think about this: over a couple of centuries Mongol armies campaigned/conquered territory in Poland, Hungary, Russia, Egypt, the Levant, Iran, Turkey, Tibet, India, China, Japan, Champa, Vietnam, Myanmar, and Java, as well as basically all of Inner Asia.

THREAD: 1. Believe me, I'm aware that David Lynch said he's making an 18-hour movie. But I got news for folks who don't write about TV regularly: every single person of any ambition who's ever worked in series TV says they're making "a long movie" or "a bunch of little movies."
2. What Lynch and Frost made owes a lot to cinema. A LOT. But it owes just as much to television, which is where the original TWIN PEAKS appeared. And where MULHOLLAND DRIVE, which started out as a TV pilot, was supposed to appear.
3. I get that David Lynch is a god to y'all. He is to me, too. But he's also more than 70 years old, and I think some part of him still feels that TV is a step down, no matter how much success he's had in it, and despite all he's done to expand its language.
