Barr's contemptuous, pretend-respect for the rule of law comes as his boss gears up to defy court orders.
Barr says he doesn't intend to provide the Judiciary Committees an unredacted copy of the report and insists dishonestly that his hands are tied with respect to Mueller's grand jury information.
Barr: if Mueller or someone else were to leak the entire report to Congress, "well, that would be unfortunate."
Barr finally nailed down says his "intention is not to ask" the court for any 6e exceptions to Mueller's grand jury information. No surprise but gives away the game
Relatedly Barr keeps saying he intends to release "as much of the information in the report" as he can, which sits uncomfortably alongside his suggestion that what he turns over will simply be a redacted version of the full report.
To clarify, Barr promised Congress he'd be as transparent as possible. You're not being as possible if you don't even bother to request the 6e exemption. So the promise was a lie and we should expect the lie to be reflected in the information Barr does transmit to Congress.
And again, this isn't even a little bit surprising. It follows inescapably from a bunch of reporting and the plain text of Barr's own letters to Congress.
But it should make you mad.
