There is an interesting dispute going on between some religious communities and the Department of Education over the new LGBT guidelines for schools. @DamianHinds just wrote this (in my view very good) letter assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/upl…
There are weekly protests going on in Birmingham at the moment by parents who don’t want LGBT education (which encourages children to accept LGBT people). The upshot of the letter is Hinds says the schools must consult parents but parents can’t have a veto bbc.co.uk/news/uk-englan…

Basically, from 2020 it will be compulsory for all children to learn about same sex couples.

Personally, I think that’s great. I think religious communities should be able to teach about their beliefs but in the context of religious studies. The reality of modern society (and the law) is LGBT people are as valid and welcome as everyone else

I don’t want to undermine how strongly some religious communities (for example catholic, orthodox Jewish, and Muslim) feel about this. From their perspective, rejecting homosexual relationships is part of their religious orthodoxy
But in a liberal society, we have to make hard choices about what our central values are. Sometimes, inevitably, those values will outpace those practised by some religious believers. And this is bound to come to a head in the state education system
The fight for LGBT equality has been long but the principles are now settled - there is a general consensus from left to right that LGBT people should live openly and without discrimination. That simply isn’t compatible with some religious beliefs. So this debate is worth having
And it is particularly heartening to see a Tory, Catholic education minister making this his fight. It shows the political consensus is there and that LGBT equality has (or should have) broad support

For me this part of the Scruton interview is inexcusable and it was correct he lost his government post.
According to Wikipedia, Islamophobia was first used as a term almost a century ago. Maybe earlier in French
I found a dicey site claiming Islamophobia was invented by the Muslim Brotherhood to stop people criticising Islam, but that appears to be a conspiracy theory.

People of public prominence should stop saying it doesn’t exist or is invented to stop people criticising Muslims.

Legal Aid should be available for all families at inquests (investigations into deaths).
▪ 'Human rights' inquests identify state failings and stop them happening again
▪ I have lots of experience of this - failings more likely to be identified if families are represented 1/4
▪ Public authorities - hospitals, prisons, police are *always* represented by lawyers. Who pays? Public funds
▪ There should be equality of arms
▪ Lawyer for family of person who died is the only lawyer challenging state witnesses and making sure failings are identified 2/4
▪ If Legal Aid was granted for families it wouldn't cost a huge amount more proportionate to the public funds going into the process but the process would be far more effective
▪ More failings identified, more accountability, more deaths prevented in future. Simples! 3/4

Fascinating speech by Lady Hale, President of the @UKSupremeCourt, on why have a UK Supreme Court. Great insight into the original justification for setting it up and thoughts on whether it is a constitutional court or not

Basically, to sum up, it’s the constitutional court for a country with an unwritten constitution! A very British fudge but one which is working quite well (for now)

I was a reporter in the Supreme Court the day @tribelaw gave the oral arguments in #BowersvHardwick, of the most historic cases in LGBT history. I am stunned to hear that he missed the ensuing 33yrs of LGBT activism and how many of us have spoken publicly about our gay lives.
While common for straight people to be unaware of the substance of our queer lives, for a strong ally like @tribelaw to assert this is disheartening. It implies the work done by so many of us over decades has failed to resonate, which undermines the very fabric of that activism.
I was the 1st out lesbian with a column in a daily newspaper. As a teenager I was expelled from high school for being a lesbian, I've faced discrimination my entire life. I wrote this last week:

First, it's a brain difference, not a mental health condition. Not a 'disorder'./
Second, autistic people are of every age, gender and sexuality. Tons of autistic people are older, are (e.g.) women, are People of Colour, are part of the LGBT+ communities. Forget all you thought you knew about it being about younger boys or teenagers. /
Third, autistic people generally have very good empathy, and many are part of social responsibility projects, peace projects, faith or spirituality enterprises. Many are artists, craftspeople, authors, carers, parents, leaders./

A huge discussion broke out on the Idle No More OFFICIAL Facebook page today. An 'Ally' decided it was finally time to let us all know that after reading our comments on that page, ...2/
...it was time we heard that unless we start learning how to employ proper English most of our allies will simply, summarily dismiss our efforts. He really felt he was doing us a favor.

When he received the pushback he so earned, the number of other 'allies' on that page .../3

The point of the presentation is working towards Work/Life balance. But really, half of it is about burnout. And a little about crunch. And some about self care. But what it isn't is a list of things "Do this and you'll be fine." Because it doesn't work like that. Each person's-
situation and answers to the problems are going to be different. What works for some people doesn't work for others. The idea is that by explaining how I figured it out, maybe you can find your way too.
First - WLB isn't about Time Management. The ability to manage your time *helps* but it's not the answer. You can keep everything neatly planned and still get crispy. The bigger and far more important part is Energy Management.

1. As I said yesterday, we got Trump the same way I got Obama the same way we got Bush the same way we got Clinton: We allowed our civil society, our shared sense of civic responsibility, and our view of government as just the thing that governs rot out from beneath us.
2. You have an affirmative duty to the species to have lots of babies. You may not be able to fulfill that duty, you may discharge it in a few ways, but the duty exists because otherwise the species withers and dies and we are the only species created imago Dei.
