Not that Musk isn't in good company. Plenty of very smart people thought that general AI was closed at hand in the 50s and 60s. Yet here we are, 60 years later, and the dream of a general-purpose AI is still just that. A dream.
Doesn't mean it won't happen one day. Just like virtual reality on the grand Lawmower Man scale is probably going to happen one day too. But fully autonomous driving is nowhere near ready to drive sleeping passengers around without intervention by next year.
The real kicker is when the markets will factor in the reality that autonomous driving is not going to bail out Uber and Lyft. That investing in either on the premise that they'll soon be able to do without paying those pesky humans is a delusion.

The deciding factor is actual proof and reporting. You can suspect all sorts of nefarious things of all sorts of organizations, but until you uncover evidence, it's not very actionable now, is it? So boost the reports when they're there rather than poo-poo the confirmation.

Let’s no forget why this college admission scandal is a thing: Because so many American companies use a diploma from a brand-name university as a caste sorting system. This isn’t about “education”, it’s about gate-keeping the aristocrats.
Tech companies are notorious for their Ivy preferences. Stanford, MIT, Berkeley. I’m sure you can get a nice education there but gtfo about it being some singular mark of virtue. Evaluate candidates on merits related to the work. Not credentials, not Ivy markers.
I graduated from Copenhagen Business School. My “application” was simply my high-school diploma and C+ grade point average. No fucking laundry list of extracurriculars, athletic trophies, or any of the other bullshit the American application process makes students dance for.

You don't have to be a luddite to think that maybe, just maybe, having these vast centralized platforms built on user-generated content and optimized for engagement was the internet taking a dark turn for the worse.
As someone said, the problem isn't the "free speech", it's the "free reach". These how-to-cut-your-wrists-effectively kids videos aren't exactly being found by sharing direct urls. They're dug up by algorithms, served up on a platter to kids following the recommendation trail.
YouTube and Facebook and other platforms built on strip-mining the most "engaging" content from the depths of human depravity may be on the web, but they're not _of_ the web. A future without this pestilence is indeed possible.

Self-driving cars a great example, because in this case there are two competing approaches -- the symbolic one, mostly consisting of handcrafted software encoding human abstractions, and the deep learning one, learned end-to-end. One will get to L4--even L5, the other never will.
It's not that deep learning is intrinsically incapable of driving -- it's that the situation space is extremely high-dimensional (due to edge cases), and that a deep learning system requires to be trained on a *dense sampling* of the same space that the system will operate in.
Because such a representative, dense sampling is impossible to obtain, even when heavily leveraging simulated environments, the symbolic approach will prevail (specifically, an approach that is mostly symbolic but blends human abstractions with learned perceptual primitives)
