Not criticising a good deed, but there needs to be better education for drivers on how to respond to a vehicle #fires in road #tunnels. A 🧵

#firesafety #fireengineering #roadsafety #driving
Means of escape & access for the fire & rescue services are part of the design considerations for modern road tunnels.

For a single direction tunnel, the assumption is that drivers will stop before the fire & leave their vehicles, evacuating in the opposite direction.
It’s not a good idea to drive past the fire as smoke control systems will typically be designed to ventilate smoke in the direction of travel & protect the means of escape/firefighter access route.

Passing the fire can lead to you being trapped in hot smoke & unable to breath.

This exemplifies everything that's wrong with the licensing system. A persistent offender who is demonstrably incapable of operating dangerous machinery in public spaces is allowed to drive again, with the 'exceptional hardship' excuse.…
#ShaneWarne & other persistent offenders should undergo psychological screening as well as a retest before he's ever allowed behind the wheel. A cycling proficiency test on roads should also be an essential part of the driving test.
Automated speed limiting tech would curb Warne's worst excesses & ensure he can never break speed limits again.
This is what the '#RoadSafety' lobby needs to address, otherwise the lives of innocent victims are worth no more than thoughts & prayers.

New study by @RachelAldred and colleagues drawing on four official data sets for England for 2005-15, analyses the risks posed to other road users from bicycles, cars and taxis, vans, buses, lorries and motorbikes per billion vehicle kilometres travelled.…
The researchers found cars and taxis were associated with two-thirds of fatalities to other road users, but lorries were associated with more than five times as many deaths for each km driven, with a similarly high death toll for buses.…

At the other end of the scale, cycling is relatively safe for others: it was associated with fewer deaths to other parties per km ridden than all the other types of transport, with just one other party death per billion km cycled.…
