As it is #NationalVolunteerWeek, we are reminded that this work is not easy. Youth want to be engaged, it is adults putting up barriers. We tweeted about lowering the voting age and our notifications have been going off by all the people who disagree.
One person said "No way! They can be swayed too easily. They do not have life experience to make good decisions until they are in their twenties. The voting age should be over 21" or ...
"Children are being manipulated by adults. The voting age must remain 18 when people are mature enough to think for themselves" Youth are strong willed. They are not taking heads for anyone but themselves.
Another was an attempt to belittle our work "Once you are an adult you will understand why kids do not get to vote." Many on the team are young adults who have voted and understand the repercussions of the lack of agency.
"Because most students don't have a clue about economics, fiscal responsibility, immigration issues, DPAs for corrupt companies, ...., sort of like Liberals."... We wonder how many adults understand this? More youth can probably understand the parlimentary system than adults
I hope the lesson learned from this is how hard youth led organizations have to fight to make an impact on their communities. There are walls every turn they (we) make. Support us. Do not tear us down.
