Hey folks: Big news out of Iowa that will have a major impact on the 2018 election. Key parts of Secretary of State Paul Pate’s voter-ID law were blocked by the state’s Supreme Court on Friday! #IApolitics 1/
Passed in 2017, this law requires Iowans to show an ID in order to cast a ballot, includes a signature-matching requirement and makes voters include a state-assigned voter-ID number on absentee-ballot request forms. 2/
No part of Pate’s voter-ID law actually improves the integrity or security of elections in the state. In fact, approximately 200,000 Iowans lack the ID necessary to vote under this new law. It’s voter suppression, plain and simple. 3/

(2/8) Almost 4 million more names were purged between 2014 and 2016 than between 2006 and 2008 — 33% growth, much higher than the growth in eligible voters and in the larger population.
(3/8) Purge rates have increased more in states that, due to their history of #racialdiscrimination, were previously subject to federal "preclearance," a practice that ended with the 2013 #SCOTUS decision Shelby County v. Holder.

On this Independence Day, when we celebrate the U.S. as a democracy and as we await a Scalia-like successor to Justice Kennedy to be nominated for #SCOTUS, some thoughts on how the Court could set the cause of voting rights back significantly in the years to come: /1
The first way that the Court can negatively affect voting rights is by holding that democracy-enhancing laws like the Voting Rights Act or campaign contribution limits are unconstitutional. The second way is by upholding state laws making it harder to register and vote. /2
In the first category, at the top of my list is that #SCOTUS with a fifth hard conservative on race could either hold that Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act is an unconstitutional racial classification or interpret it so weekly it dies death by 1,000 cuts /3

Five years ago, five justices on the Supreme Court invalidated key provisions of the Voting Rights Act that for decades protected voters in states with pernicious histories of voting discrimination. Don't forget what happened in the immediate aftermath of this appalling decision:
Within 24 hours of the decision, the conservative justices prompted a deluge of voter suppression legislation. Texas and Alabama announced plans to plow ahead with restrictive and previously blocked voter-ID laws. Weeks later, N.C. passed its monster voter suppression law.
Five years later, the landscape is worse: The Republican voter suppression campaign now has the enthusiastic endorsement of the nation’s president – a president who is stacking the federal courts with the very people who cheered the dismantling of the Voting Rights Act.
