Chicago PD claimed a 16 y/o girl bit, kicked & spit on them. Charged w/ felony. Police union blasted Kim Foxx for dropping charges. Video shows she did nothing. The officers pushed & dragged her down flight of stairs. Punched her. Stepped on her. Tased her.bit.ly/2Ktmk5O
The video shows incredible violence by officers. Any non-cop who did this in NY could/would likely be charged w assault in second degree. Violent felony. Mandatory minimum 2 years, max 7. These officers no longer work in the school but remain on the force. Still making salary.
Chicago is demanding Jussie Smolett pay back $130000 for faking his attack. As @matthewferner points out, this lie by Chicago PD will cost the city likely far more. Will that money be coming from their budget? The officers’ salaries? Of course not.
There is so rarely any accountability for police officers even when they do horrific things caught on camera & lie about them. Creates a sense of invincibility, which, when paired w/ weapons, anger, a bad day, racism, whatever, can lead to ultra violent actions, injury, & death.
Last year, Chicago paid out over $100 million to settle police misconduct & abuse cases. Police departments do not internalize that cost. Taxpayers do. By extension, communities are deprived needed funds for poverty alleviation, drug treatment, housing.
Police brutality is expensive. “A 2015 Wall Street Journal study found that the 10 biggest police depts in country had over the previous 5 years spent a collective $1.02 billion to settle cases that included shootings, beatings, & wrongful imprisonments.”harpers.org/archive/2018/1…
