Indigenisation Without Mind

I asked the teacher
To teach him
My son
All about Africa
But she says
No suitable books
See our age
See the stage
We have reached
As a continent
But visit a nursery
The books
The toys
The tongue
All are imported.
My countrymen
How can indigenisation
Survive without the mind
Africa is a jungle
They say,
Why import a ladder
Into a jungle?
Well you can now see
For yourself
The economic hypocrisy.

“Among the groups that visited me on 6th June were AG [Action Group] members from Owode in Egba Division – Owode was the Constituency of Chief [Ayo] Rosiji. They came in four lorries, about one hundred of them – men and women.
They were led by Chief Lajiga (of blessed memory). He was an elderly man of well over eighty years of age, and the AG Chairman for Owode area. He made a moving speech, in the course of which he gave two parables which I considered most fitting to the prevailing circumstances,
and which I still vividly remember. Said he (I translate):
 
‘Firstly, I liken the AG to the palm tree. Happily, the palm tree is the symbol of the AG. In order for the palm tree to give maximum yield of palm fruits, it must be periodically trimmed and cleaned.

My initial thoughts follow.
For context, I ebike commute 3-5 times a week to downtown and take my 3 year old daughter to Pillow Elementary via Shoal Creek Blvd. Last year, we used the daycare at Shoal Creek and Steck (for ~2-3 years). It's a stroad I'm on almost daily.
Survey input. I think community input, as currently practiced, heavily favors the broken status quo. Heavily disfavors people unable to get away from family and other commitments to let staff know 'what their priorities are'.

In other Mueller news on this busy news day, a judge in Alexandria, VA today indefinitely delayed the scheduled February trial of Flynn business partner Bijan Rafiekian. Feds had asked for a two-week delay. (1/x)
Recall that Flynn's sentencing was unexpectedly postponed last month so the judge could see how helpful Flynn was in the case. Mueller and Flynn lawyers were supposed to get back to him by March 13 on how that was going. (2/x)
Idea that Rafeikian trial would start in February, was always, frankly, insane. There are classified information issues in the case. Once CIPA process begins better question would be: which February? Anyway, another indication how timelines often slide to the right (3/x)

This is always on my mind now, when I’m at work. And when I’m not there, but thinking about work.

Here’s what I’ve noticed...just in the last month...
I teach one small US History class. When brainstorming what they could remember or connect to Civil Rights, I got some MLKs, a Rosa Parks, a few associations with racism or better treatment, and a surprising (to me) number of kids saying 2nd Amendment.
In my class of 18, no one could tell me anything about Malcolm X or the Black Panther Party.
