Canned #seafood #mercury concentration results from class experiment are in & were as expected. Hg in ppm, wet weight w (SD), n=3 cans for each:
Clams: 0.01 (0.001)
Salmon: 0.013 (0.001)
Chunk light tuna: 0.059 (0.017)
Albacore tuna: 0.28 (0.041)

So what does this mean?
We found what was expected based on recommended lists
Albacore levels similar to published studies, all of which typically show this fish w higher and much more variable Hg than FDA risk assessment and publication. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/15364…
Finally, eating fish has amazing health benefits and so this is a complicated issue. Best to just be informed and subsequently make the right choices for you. However, it’s time for the FDA to add albacore to their list of fish to avoid to risk groups edf.org/oceans/mercury…
Finally: this was for my #marine #ecology class. in my toxicology class in the fall we will expand this to increase sample size, stores where we purchase, and include fresh fish. So excited!!

Would also love to collaborate w @AwesomeBioTA on to check species ID and risk of Hg
