Nothing directly related to this but every time I see controversies involving alcoholic beverages, I'd like to remind people that tapai contains 5% alcohol, equalling to any of your everyday beer beverages.
One UPM study confirms this. Ferment for one day you'll get 3% alcohol content. Wait two days, you'll get 5% alcohol.
One UK study confirms this also ukessays.com/essays/chemist…
Majlis fatwa says drinks with >0.01% alcohol is haram. Any food with >1% alcohol is haram. So I guess my point is tapai is haram. It is also delicious. Your mother like it, your grandmother like it and probably her mother also liked it. And don't get me started with air tuak.
I was thinking, how many tapais does one need to consume before one is considered mabuk? Mabukness can be measured through our blood alcohol content. According to this chart by Texas state, 0.08% is the limit.
According to the chart, 1 drink is equivalent to 12 ounces of beer with 5% alcohol content. So I'm taking the liberty of assuming an ounce in mass is the same as an ounce in volume (it's not). Thus, 12 ounce of beer is equivalent to 340g.
Therefore for a man weighing 180lbs or 81kg to get drunk from tapai, he needs to consume, 4 servings of 340g of tapai. I would guess like half 3/4 portion of an average plate of rice. Give a couple of grams from the deviation in unit conversion.
That's three full plate of tapai. That's a lot of tapai.
Somebody brought this video to my attention and I was wrong. Tapai is halal. Because majlis fatwa deemed that if your intentions (Niat) is not to make alcoholic beverages, then it is indeed halal
But I think it is interesting to note that according to the research, tapai still contains 5% alcohol; the same as beer and if you eat enough tapai, you can still get drunk. Is it still halal then?
If it still gets you drunk but it's halal, are you a syariah compliant drunk?
Can one open a syariah compliant bar that serves varieties of tapai? Is this a legit business idea? You tell me.
Why am I tweeting these things? Did I have one too many tapais?
I regret to report that this is also haram. So I guess the only way for a muslim man of a certain weight to enjoy 5% alcohol is to brew one himself at home without the niat to make an alcoholic beverage and don't make enough to intoxicate himself
