Like many, I'm applying for an Irish passport, initially I thought if there's no deal it'd be easier for my work. But it's more than that now; both my grandparents on my Dad's side were Irish and it's been lovely getting in touch with my roots (and grandparents I barely knew)...
For example, my grandad’s birth certificate arrived today. In that one document I’ve learnt more about him than I’ve known most of my life. His family were from Whiteabbey. His father was a tram conductor. His mother, a name lost to my family, was Margaret o’Neill.
Brexit has put the most tremendous strain on the Anglo-Irish relations and the Good Friday Agreement. I suppose one modest dividend might be those of us with Irish blood in our veins come to appreciate our common history better.
That process will doubtless be going on with millions of others, not just with Irish roots but from all over Europe. One of the not inconsiderable ironies of Brexit- reminding us just how interwoven our common threads are.
For all it can be a cesspit- twitter can also be wonderful. Thanks to one of my followers I now know more about my family on my Dad's side than I've ever know- all the way back to my great, great, great grandfather (William Goodall) and great great grandparents (Samuel and Sarah)
Also know all of my family were working in the textile trade and even the house and street they lived in (all ten of them, Irish catholic, natch). Think I'll be making a visit to Whiteabbey in County Antrim soon.
That was one noisy house...
