Perhaps someone who regularly has to import or export from the EU as part of their business could jump in with thoughts on how the new process will differ from what they have to do now. Because AFAIK there's very little paperwork involved at the moment.

Enough is enough! Laundry list of what US lobbyists are demanding before any UK trade deal reads like a horror film.
- scrap safety first approach to food quality
- weaken data protection
- allow hormone beef
- allow GM foods
- cut cattle farming subsidies

- get rid of safety first approach to chemicals
- scrap GI protections on e.g. Cornish pasties
- change NHS drug procurement rules
- lower dairy hygiene standards
- allow data transfers overseas
- allow businesses to sue the UK itself
etc. etc.
No prize is worth that level of damage. It's just not. So we should forget about ever doing our own trade deal with the US. Perhaps the EU's immeasurably stronger negotiating power would be able to whittle down the list to something bearable. But us? Never in a million years!

Brexit and the Irish border issue... an analogy:
Think of the border as a piece of rope strung over a canal that flows between NI and the Republic. At the moment, there's nothing to impede the free passage of boats. The level of the canal is the same on both sides of the rope.
Same regulatory environment, same standards, etc., all derived from the EU. But after Brexit, the level of the water in NI will begin to change, unless the UK commits to locking itself permanently into exactly the same situation as Ireland's by tracking every change the EU makes.
But if the water level becomes different on one side of the rope and the other, you're going to need something much more sophisticated than a rope to keep the waterway open. You're going to need a lock. The lock's the hard border, with all its infrastructure and mechanisms.

£774,053,350 worth of penalty charge notices have been issued on the Dartford Crossing up until Dec 2018 (11,057,905 PCNs at £70 each). Amount collected may have been less (penalty is halved if paid within 14 days) but it's still a massive hidden tax!

For reference the Dart Charge system was put in place in November 2014. So in just over 4 years, drivers passing through the area clocked up over three quarters of a billion pounds in fines. It's a run-rate of £15.48 million a month in fines!

SO. #Brexit boils down to how - or if - the UK can ever leave the dreaded Irish backstop.

There is talk of a "review mechanism". So what might that be? How might it work?

Let's start from the point of agreement.

Both sides say backstop is
a) necessary
b) temporary
c) should be superseded by future relationship

So there does need to be what one EU source calls an "unwinding" mechanism. /2
The problem (before we get to the detail of that mechanism) is that no-one can see what version of the Future Relationship can deliver on UK commitment to no return to a hard border in Ireland.

May's dual tariff or 'MaxFac' unicorns are dead. /3

1 Principled and practical are TM's new adjectves for #Brexit, which sounds conciliatory and is the sort of thing the EU do want to hear.

b UK out CAP & Fisheries, but in on crime & terror & shared prosperity fund
c No hard Border between NI & I, but protect the Union
d End of CJEU in UK, return "accountability" to the various elected assemblies

1. The full U.K. solution to the Irish border will be rejected by the EU
2. A ‘common rulebook for goods’ - the EU could do two things: A) reject as cherry-picking parts of the single market or B) start discussing how much of this is doable under an FTA.
There’s a good chance it would be B, but it will have to be tweaked significantly

Lots of noise around on #Brexit and customs today. The 'war' cabinet couldn't make decision. Here's what I know from sources in London, Dublin and Brussels. /1
The Olly Robbins presentation to cabinet heavily favoured the idea of a 'customs partnership' over a 'streamlined' or 'MaxFac' solution - still basically the two options outlined in the August customs paper here, and regurgitated at Mansion House /2

Even though the CP has been dismissed as 'magical thinking' etc, the govt is not giving up on the idea.

Why? Because, if it worked, it's the only way to get an All-UK solution on customs, avoid a goods border in Irish Sea and preserve some independent trade policy /3

Jaguar Land Rover recently agreed 2 build a new plant in Slovakia with EU grant, owned by Tata, same company who trashed our steel industry & emptied workers pension funds.

British Army's new Ajax fighting vehicles to be built in SPAIN using SWEDISH steel at the request of the EU to support jobs in Spain with EU grant, rather than Wales.
