One of the recurring themes of this moment in history is watching people tell bold-faced lies before having their internal communications leaked. America is struggling with being entirely unable to hold liars accountable. nbcnews.com/tech/social-me…
We know what's happening at these companies. We know they are selling us out and cashing in by harming us. We *know* this. But publicly, we are still obligated to have "civil" conversations where they get to lie to our faces and we have to pretend we can't tell.
More importantly, when the truth comes out, when we all see starkly that they are lying liars who lied, repeatedly, we watch our institutions throw their hands up as if there's nothing to be done. No repercussions, no consequences. Nothing.
I know some people have trouble with drawing comparisons to historical events. Because they tend to loom large and it doesn't feel that way when you're inside of them. But we live in Watergate level scandals every fucking day. And nobody gets in trouble.
