When countries vote for extreme parties, the people who vote for them don't think they're extreme parties. They think they're a reasonable response to a credible threat.
Most people who do bad things don't think they're bad people. They just think that everyone else, including those judging them for their actions, would do the same if they faced the same circumstances.
I remember feeling truly sad for a member of an EDL-type group who'd been harassing us. She was crying because she genuinely believed 80% of rapes in the UK were committed by immigrants but everyone else was ignoring it.
In her mind, she was a tragic hero.
