The highest food prices in Europe seem to be in Switzerland and Norway, two countries which are outside of the customs union /EU common external tariff.

Could it be that the farmers in those countries are the only farmers for hundreds of miles around that don't receive EU subsidies and so the governments of those countries keep their external tariffs high to protect their agricultural industries from foreign competition?
Could the UK end up having to do the same if we left the EU?
Wait, nevermind! A post-doctoral fellow at the University of Oslo said just that!
Should probably mention that he specialises in EU-Norway relations.....
