Me: To understand a certain song, you have to know that New York was a mess in the 70s/early 80s -- even though today it is one of the safest and most functional big cities.

Younger son: Was it Batman?
Me: *Actually* Batman's Gotham City was basically a stand-in for Chicago; New York is more like Superman's Metropolis.

Maybe I'm too influenced by Christopher Nolan's trilogy in thinking of Gotham as Chicago-esque

News about Durham inquiry whose existence we broke last night: he's conducting a "review" of intel collection involving the Trump campaign & Russia, not a criminal investigation w/ power to subpoena documents and witnesses. w/ @adamgoldmanNYT @npfandos nytimes.com/2019/05/14/us/…
Earlier today @LindseyGrahamSC , the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Cmte, said he'd cancel plans for an oversight probe into the Russia investigators bc he didn't want to get in the way of the criminal investigation. He wasn't pleased to learn it isn't one; backoff may be off.
One notable thing about all this is that it indicates for all the turmoil from Trump team about Carter Page FISA etc, there still isn't sufficient factual predicate to meet the standards for opening a criminal investigation about any of this.

Former FBI general counsel Jim Baker defends form of disclosure to FISA Court about political origins of Steele dossier info. Says full page footnote was a red light to judges familiar with wiretap applications and not specifically naming funder is standard minimization practice.
Baker: “There was no attempted coup.” Says he has gone to the mat in his career to stop things he thought were wrong (true - stopping Cheney from hiding origins of Stellarwind info from FISA court) and he would not have tolerated even talk of such a thing.
Baker says period between Clinton email investigation until he left FBI was crazy, traumatic, hard experience. But they perceived a threat to the country from Russia that needed to be addressed, and an effort to interfere with its ability to deal with the Russians.

My colleague Robert Pear died last night following a stroke. I would like to share a few memories and anecdotes about what it was like to work near and with him for the past 11 years. /1 nytimes.com/2019/05/08/obi…
Robert had a very unusual personality. Despite being invariably gentle and genial, he was extremely private and incapable of the sort of chit chat and sharing details about one’s life that human bonds are normally forged from. Nevertheless, he made connections in his own way. /2
When I first came to the NYT from the Boston Globe in May 2008, the first story I pitched – about a Bush White House directive to get regulations done by a certain deadline so they’d be harder for the next administration to overturn – turned out to overlap with Robert’s turf. /3

Big secret just announced at Transmissions event, there's going to be a Trans Pride event this year and they're not going to allow people to pink-wash it! Big woo from audience.

THEY DID IT!!! After years of working on these bills, New York @MomsDemand volunteers helped pass a historic gun safety legislation package today in not one, but both chambers. It includes a Red Flag Law, a bump stock ban, provisions to close the Charleston loophole, and more.
The package now heads to the desk of @NYGovCuomo to be signed into law.

THIS is the result of the unglamorous, heavy lifting of grassroots activism: years of showing up and fighting to change the makeup of the legislature, and then demanding action when we won. 💪💪💪
Thank you to all advocates on the ground including @NYSenDems, @NYSA_Majority, @LIFECampInc, @NYAGV1, @Bradybuzz, @GiffordsCourage, @gaysxgunsny, @LI4GunSafety, @ny_indivisible and numerous other groups and people who helped bring a gun sense majority to New York.

I’m currently reading the transcript of Judge Ellis’ hearing on the motion by Manafort’s counsel. scribd.com/document/37828… He asks a very interesting question. What’s the difference between Manafort’s case and Cohen’s case?
Because Cohen’s case was referred to the New York office and Manafort’s was retained by SC even though it involves matters not pertaining to the Russia investigation (the Judge points out), it makes it appear that you’re keeping the Manafort case to use as leverage.
You want to squeeze Manafort to get at Trump, and you’re not really interested in the bank fraud you’ve charged him with.

1) There’s a lot of BS about @nntaleb’s Black Swan, antifragility & skin in da game. Let’s take the gloves off and get into trouble.
2) When the Swan flew out, it was immediately butchered by imbeciles not understanding that you can’t predict the unpredictable.

That is the point – and an IQ filter NNT himself proly did not expect.
3) In any complex domain – life! – the Blackest Swan is always skulking around the corner. You know it’s coming, but you don’t know what where when. You can't tame what you've never even conceived of.
