Since Reagan, Republicans have gradually taken over almost all aspects of government both nationally and in many states. Republicans have CONTROL of government by arguing government is the problem 1/x
With Trump, the final plan is unfolding across the US with attacks on women's rights and relentless dismantling of public services as well as eroding gains made toward more rights and universal healthcare 2/x
In SC - like WV, CO, and Los Angeles - teachers mobilized in surprising numbers to challenge the failures of decades of Republican leadership in the state. HOWEVER, teachers in SC have mostly voted Republican throughout those times, against their own interests 3/x
SC is a disturbing example of the problem: Republicans manipulate voters with the veneer of religious and conservative cultural rhetoric to promote their market/libertarian political ideologies that HURT women, people in poverty, children, racial minorities, workers etc. 4/x
Republican policies and ideologies have been white nationalism, misogyny, and calloused libertarianism since the 1960s. Yet, voters line up to vote Republican because the city councilman is anti-abortion 5/x
Republican leadership has ironically proven (by design) that government fails citizens. There is no other option than taking political leadership away from Republicans, and not because Democrats offer any real alternative 6/x
The ONLY consequence for politicians is to lose elections, lose power. Step one is eradicate Republican dominance by NOT voting for vapid one-issue reasons. 7/x
In SC, I am waiting to see if those same teachers will now become politically active and break from the Republican party ... I am skeptical ... I want to be hopeful ... we can no longer claim not to be political, not to be partisan 8/x
Everything a teacher does is political and teachers have been forced into a corner where everything they do is now necessarily partisan. Will we have the political courage to make a difference? 9/ -fin-
