It costs NYC, $2,000 to arrest someone. It costs them $500 per night to jail them on Rikers Island.

If someone is sentenced to 60 days in jail because they didn't pay a $2.75 subway fare, it costs the city, $22,000.
This doesn't include the cost of their arraignment, court staff, prosecutor or lawyer.

It is also based on 40 days in jail because, for misdemeanors, you serve 2/3 of your actual sentence.
My colleague, Terry Davidson, knows these statistics better than anyone. He works on what are often very complicated math problems - calculating jail & prison sentences. So the actual cost is much higher than I said.
