A serious request: I would like someone who opposes impeachment explain to me why impeachment proceedings aren't required if you have credible evidence a president obstructed justice?
Okay, this is the best answer: impeachment is both a political & a legal process, so if you think the politics is bad you can refrain even if (as now) the president has clearly committed impeachable offences. But still leaves a question
Let's say, arguendo, that impeachment is politically unwise & agree it's not required. We're still left with the problem of president who has clearly, obviously & in front of our eyes obstructed justice. What is the remedy for that?

1. A modest proposal: if you think abortion is murder, you should support mandatory vasectomies for every boy that hits puberty. That vasectomy would be (temporarily) reversed when man & partner want to have a child. Result: zero abortions.
2. "But Jeet," you're saying. "Mandatory vasectomies would be an invasion of bodily autonomy!" True, but much less so than mandatory childbirth. Mandatory vasectomies are the least intrusive way to get to a zero abortion world.
3. "But Jeet," you object. "What if the reverse vasectomy doesn't work?" Simple: each male also has sperm frozen before vasectomy, kept on hold if needs to procreate. Again: mandatory vasectomies are the only way to create a zero abortion world.

1. A few thoughts on the historian John Lukacs (1924-2019), whose death at age 95 has just been announced. Here a something he wrote in 1975 for @commonwealmag predicting that a post-Soviet Russia would be dominated by a criminal underworld.
2. Lukacs was born in Hungary in 1924 to a mixed-faith family (Jewish & Catholic). He identified as Catholic but his Jewish heritage (shaped by grandparents he was close to) was important for making him wary of nationalism & faux-populism
3. Lukacs was a conservative but of a type that is virtually extinct in America (& indeed in much of the world): a traditionalist wary of mass politics based on nationalism & scapegoating of minorities. He was for that reason properly scornful of American conservative movement.

1. It increasingly feels like Biden, if he's the Democratic nominee, will be Hilary Clinton 2.0, but worse. A campaign based on personal revulsion against Trump, nostalgia for normal politics, & outreach to moderate Republicans.
2. Biden is Hilary Clinton but worse. Clinton generated real enthusiasm as a pioneering woman. Also Clinton made some efforts, admittedly awkward (hot sauce!) to reach the young. Biden's message is people under 40 need to fuck off & die.
3. Both Clinton (with her alt-right speech) & Biden (invoking Charlottesville in announcing his campaign) had campaigns using rhetorical anti-racism as glue to hold together Democratic coalition. This type of performative wokeness is, alas, of limited electoral utility.

“He’s just not worth it” is brilliant messaging.

Setting aside the actual question, this message blows up GOP messaging in advance of 2020.

Pelosi is saying to the GOP, “You want to make this election about defending that pathetic orange sniveling bully? Have fun with that.”
Pelosi goes on to say that “unless there’s something so compelling and overwhelming and bipartisan” we shouldn’t go down the road of impeachment.

BIPARTISAN is the key word there.

“Compelling and overwhelming” evidence exists.

But Republicans stand by Trump anyway.

Our Founders anticipated someone like Trump. They never anticipated a full 50% of lawmakers would support that person no matter what.

That reality puts Pelosi and other Dem leaders in a challenging position.

Without some GOP participation, impeachment will be mere theater.
