When asked for clarification during his morning press conference, AMLO makes clear that the Merida Initiative would disappear & that his Govt is asking the US to reorient its aid towards a development plan for SouthernMX & CentralAm. Current FY2020 Merida request is $76 million
AMLO seems unaware that Merida funding during the past 10 years has encompased not only military equipment financing but a wide range of projects from technology for MX’s migration institute (INM), prosecutors training & even money for UN’s agencies monitoring human rights
Asked about the future of the Merida Initiative, Mexican FM Ebrard was less drastic than AMLO opting not to refer to it as an entire “cancellation” of it (AMLO said Merida would “disappear”). One could bet that many Merida programs will survive perhaps only under a different name
