/ A herd of unicorns were created when entrepreneurs peeled off categories from Craigslist and built vertical product marketplaces (eg Airbnb, Stubhub, etc).
/ In a similar way, a new wave of startups are peeling off job categories from LinkedIn and building verticalized labor marketplaces.
/ As a result, some of the most interesting opportunities for entrepreneurs and investors in the next five years will be in hyper-verticalized labor marketplaces.
/ In particular, verticals where the labor can be fractionalized (eg, tasks, gigs, freelance work) are most interesting because the repeat usage is higher, the revenue per worker is higher and the demand is higher.
/ A few key things to look for: (i) the more verticalized, the better. (ii) find a vertical with high repeat usage for both supply and demand (iii) have a strategy to avoid disintermediation and (iv) consider a data moat.
/ Two examples of hyper-verticalized marketplaces @craft_ventures just invested in are @trustedhealth, a marketplace for hospitals to hire nurses, and @Dray_Alliance, a marketplace that helps shippers hire dray truckers to deliver containers.
/ We're excited to see a new class of innovators unbundle LinkedIn!
