I love redemption arcs, but I’m not evolved enough to digest this feel-good story from The Advocate about a man’s post-prison “second chance” at life after burning 14-year-old Terri Elizabeth Pire alive. Imagine this story existing if he was black. theadvocate.com/baton_rouge/ne…
This quote sticks out:

“People do impulsive things in their youth (but) once they mature and have a chance to change, (they) are serious about change.”

Smoking weed or having your 1st hookup at a party is impulsive.

Beating & burning a girl alive...is not youthful impulsivity.
How little do we value girls and women that a white man gets a redemption narrative about his success after prison for burning a 14-year-old girl alive, and people actually try to dismiss what he did to her as the actions of “impulsive...youth”? Again, imagine if he was black.
And on top of that, how low of a bar do we have for white men and boys?
CORRECTION: He did not burn her *alive.* He beat her to death and returned to burn her body to get rid of fingerprints.

Correction: He did not burn her *alive.* He beat her to death and then burned her body. The story is vague on this point (as you can see here), but @gonzopancho shared a link that lays out the details. Still, my bad for not looking it up myself.
That said, I feel the same knowing he beat her to death and only burned her after. Still heinous, horrid, and I’m still amazed that there is a feel-good story about how great his life is now.
