Hi folks - I'm on one of my 2019 vacation weeks (when you're old you get those) so I'm not currently writing a column (and when I return this weekend I'm locked into a day of Biden-mania, FWIW). But when I do get back in the game, I plan to UNLEASH HELL against....
...Alabama (a state I know all too well, having lived there for 3-plus years as a young journalist) and all the other "slave states" of the Old Confederacy that are showing their true colors by enslaving women and their bodies in the 21st Century, and MORE IMPORTANTLY...
...that it's incumbent upon white men such as myself to use some of our UNEARNED MALE PRIVILEGE and speak out, march, and fight by any means necessary to support our sisters in Alabama and all over the U.S. for their reproductive rights and their human rights! I stand with you!

2. As we later learned from Michael Cohen's House testimony, $8.7 billion was also the figure that Trump -- a couple of years before his presidential bid -- begged Deutsche Bank to vouch for him as his net worth so the NFL could let him buy the Buffalo Bills.
3. As Cohen testified, the $8.7 billion figure was total BS. It included $4 billion as value of "the Trump brand," something no sane accountant would ever vouch for. And there's evidence that some property values -- like an estate in Westchester County -- were grossly overstated

2. This week, the House Judiciary Committee dropped a bombshell on Trump World when it requested info from 81 players like Trump's campaign, the Trump Org, his sons, his son-in-law, etc.

Hard to believe but one name should be added to the list.

3. Pamela Newman is little known outside of the insurance world - where she's a star. She rose through the ranks to become an executive veep at one of the world's biggest firms, Aon.

She also had a superstar client: Donald J. Trump.

1. If you don't like the Sunrise Movement or don't believe we need a moon shot mentality about climate, OK. But if you don't think that children protesting can change the world for good, then it's time for a quick history lesson. Come with me back to 1963.
2. Dr. Martin Luther King was fighting for civil rights in the Deep South, and his place in history was not yet guaranteed. His Albany, Ga., campaign had fizzled, and his new campaign to end segregation in Birmingham did not start off well.

Writing about #Biden's role in mass incarceration this week.
Congress's mandatory sentencing laws during the Reagan-Bush years were the most Draconian in modern US history.
That's something Biden will have to explain if he ever campaigns outside white working class enclaves.

When I was teaching literacy in prisons & halfway houses while in the domestic Peace Corps in Louisiana & Pennsylvania, every one of my students was functionally illiterate. That means unable to read above a 5th grade level, the level deemed able to function as an adult.

These men and women were unable to read the instructions on a medication bottle, a food preparation label, a street map, an employment form. Imagine not being able to read how to prepare your child's meds or food, or apply for a job? Where does that leave you in adult society?

If a moderate Republican president had been elected in 2016, do you think he or she wouldn’t have been called “racist, sexist, homophobic, Nazi”? “Xenophobic, child-hater who wants to starve old people”? Do you think there wouldn’t have been a “resistance”?
Fact is, no matter how meek, no matter how moderate, leftists brutally savage Republicans. And they use hatred and fear-mongering to motivate their base. This is the way it has been for my entire lifetime. I am very, very tired of it.
So, now we must consider Trump. Is he a buffoon? Is he incoherent at times? Yes, and yes. But do I fault him for bucking up and playing smashmouth football with the leftists? No. I don’t.
