In Surah Hashr, where we see many of the Names of Allah (SWT) mentioned, Allah (SWT) also mentions His Name, “As Salaam” (السَلام).
This Name comes from the root of (س ل م) which fundamentally means, “peace.” Another meaning from this root is “safety.” The scholars mention that this root also refers to not being weighed down, or burdened by anything.
The reference in Surah Hashr (59:23) is the only mention of this Name in the Qur’an, but the word “salaam” (سَلام) appears many times.
In Surah Yunus, Allah (SWT) says: (وَاللَّـهُ يَدْعُو إِلَىٰ دَارِ السَّلَامِ). This means, “Allah invites to the House of Peace...” (10:25). When Allah (SWT) refer to Paradise here, He calls it: “A House of Peace (سلام).”
In Surah Taha, Allah (SWT) speaks about His peace and blessings that are sent on people who follow His guidance: (وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَىٰ مَنِ اتَّبَعَ الْهُدَىٰ). Again, we see the word “Salaam” referring to peace and blessings (20:47).
At the beginning of a powerful passage in Surah Furqan about the qualities of the Believers, Allah (SWT) says:
وَعِبَادُ الرَّحْمَـٰنِ الَّذِينَ يَمْشُونَ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ هَوْنًا وَإِذَا خَاطَبَهُمُ الْجَاهِلُونَ قَالُوا سَلَامًا
This means, “The servants of Ar Rahman are those people who walk on this earth in an easy-going manner; and when they are confronted by ignorant people, they say “Peace” and move on.” (25:63).
We also learn about this idea of “Salaam” from many narrations of the Prophet (ﷺ). He taught us that we can not go to Paradise until we believe, and we can not believe until we love one another - and that the best way to develop this love is to spread peace.
So, saying “Salaam” and greeting one another is a means of entering Paradise and gaining the pleasure of Allah (SWT).
When the Prophet (ﷺ) first arrived in Madina, he gave an address to the community. He said, “Oh people, spread Salaam, and share food with one another (and with the needy).”
In another narration, he added, “Build bonds of family and pray at night while others asleep. If you do this, then you will enter into Paradise safely, with peace and tranquility.” SubhanAllah, such powerful advice from the Prophet (ﷺ) #NamesOfAllah
