Lyudmila Mikhailovna Pavlichenko was world's most deadly female sniper. Cover of Collier's magazine, May 1944.
Pavlichenko fought on the battlefields, but also became a skilled diplomat. She travelled to America in 1942 to push for the opening of second front. She became the first Soviet citizen to be received by a US President when Franklin D. Roosevelt welcomed her to the White House.
Ludmila Pavlichenko became friends with Eleanor Roosevelt. The first lady accompanied Pavlichenko on a speaking tour with stops in Chicago, Detroit and farther west, and even invited her for a week’s vacation at the family estate in Hyde Park, NY.
"In speeches across America and often before thousands, the woman sniper made the case for a U.S. commitment to fighting the Nazis in Europe. And in doing so, she drove home the point that women were not only capable, but essential to the fight."
Her speech in Chicago impressed upon Americans the need for the second front: “Gentlemen, I am 25 years old and I have killed 309 fascist occupants by now. Don’t you think, gentlemen, that you have been hiding behind my back for too long?" There followed a roar of support.
