Growing up, everyweek my mother took me to the book store. Raja Ram Mohan Roy's was the first biography, I read. My first school project was to recreate the sati scene. Roy, seeing his sister in law being pushed to the pyre.
I cut the characters from tinkle, used plenty of thermocol to create the scene.

Roy was never my super hero but the person I wished to be. He did two things which most of us fail to do. But we all ought to do. 1. Empathy 2. Act.
Empathy. Guess, we all at times feel a little sad, looking at plight of fellow human/creature. Most often, we get numb. We find some justification to shield ourselves from that pain. Because if we are honest about the emotion 'empathy'. It obligated us to act.
To act, we need courage.
Yes, people might call him British chamcha or justify sati. Should we waste our energy on educating those who just want attention?

Let's try to inculcate a bit of Roy in all of us. At least, a bit of empathy & action.

Need this more than ever!
