For saving even one woman from the fires of a pyre, Raja Ram Mohan Roy has my respects. But my admiration for him ends there. He was an intellectual Sepoy of the British who devastated native traditions in his awe for all things English. We can indeed call him the first 'Lutyen'.
Barely a decade since the British took Delhi from the Marathas and became the masters of India. Already, they found an Indian ally to crush the native pride in language & culture. A letter sent by 'missionary educationist' Dr Alexander Duff to the British house of commons-

Not only did he repeatedly press the authorities and missionaries to Anglicize Indians into submission to British learning and 'Christian morality', he personally helped in it.

His understanding of Vedic philosophy was rudimentary and superficial. He has every right to his personal opinion. But when he rejects the ancient Vedic Monism with loose words while unabashedly promoting Western monotheism, I am truly saddened.
Another Bengali would soon burst forth onto Bharat- Narendranath Datta. The greatest Bengali. The last rishi. Vivekananda. If they had met, he would have given Raja Ram a Vedic intellectual thrashing he deserved!

Lastly, Raja Ram makes a statement which I cannot EVER forgive him for. He believed Math & Science came from Europe. He had NO knowledge of Siddhantas. Or even heard of Aryabhata, Bhaskara or Brahmagupta.

Yet he convinced Indians they never cultivated Science!
