1/ Talking to @TheLaurenValdez tonight we had a big insight that in retrospect seems blindingly obvious: BASB is “just” another way of working. It’s a WOW
2/ So far I’ve tried to invent a new field (PKM, which never sticks), connect to an existing one (PIM, which no one cares about), or just use the brand name (BASB, which sparks interest but requires lots of explanation)
3/ It’s much easier and more effective to place it in the lineage of other WOWs like design thinking, agile/Kanban, Lean Startup, TOC, holocracy, GTD, etc. This both elevates it to a fundamentally new way of working, but also grounds it in a pre-existing category
4/ It’s not about notes, digital or otherwise. That would be like saying design thinking is about post-it’s, or Kanban is about posters with columns. These are the tools, but the approach to work is what makes them powerful and unique
5/ It also is suitingly grandiose (a NEW way of working....) but in a way that people are used to seeing. There is an existing market and mindshare for trainings, courses, books, and consulting on new ways of working. We can follow the blueprint laid down by these others
6/ The BASB WOW is about not relying on the capabilities of the brain, externalizing thinking into tools, linking together and remixing idea artifacts, creating feedback loops between digital and human minds, building components that can be assembled later, and other principles
7/ Basically, it is a division of labor between human and digital minds, leveraging each of them to their full potential while freeing the human mind from things it is not designed for and doesn’t enjoy
8/ It is a method for focusing the human brain on the creativity only it can achieve, by offloading as many functions as possible to machines, which are just beginning to reach this capability. To optimize our digital tools so we don’t have to be optimized
