Entirely right. A royal college invitation to speak carries great prestige. To see @rcgp extending this to someone who states she sees nothing wrong with Enoch Powell’s Rivers of Blood speech was flabbergasting. theguardian.com/society/2019/m…

I note that @JuliaHB1 has now responded to her "no-plaforming" by RCGP on one of her (many) platforms - in this case, The Spectator - by attacking the doctor starting the petition against her invitation as a "fanatical Remain campaigner". (1/8)
She implies that somehow doctors’ opposition against RCGP’s invitation is merely concocted outrage masking their real beef - that she supports Brexit. (2/8)
Memo to Julia. Brexit is not the issue here. Nor is your one tweet about Rivers of Blood alone. It’s the attitude that leads you to write (repeatedly) comments like:

"This obsession with “identity” and “diversity” is just a different kind of racism.”

A visual argument for vaccines, in five tweets:

1/ A ward of polio victims, incarcerated inside "iron lungs" in 1950s America. Many are children, their lungs paralysed, unable to breathe unaided. Thanks to vaccination, no-one has caught polio in the UK since the 1980s.
2/ Roald Dahl with his beloved daughter, Olivia, who died, aged 7, from measles. He wrote:

“'Are you feeling all right?' I asked her.

'I feel all sleepy,' she said.

In an hour, she was unconscious. In twelve hours she was dead."
3/ 82,500. The number of measles cases in Europe in 2018. That is 3x as many as in 2017, and an astonishing 15x as many as in 2016.

Last year, measles caused 72 avoidable deaths in Europe. Many victims were children.

A few facts, Darren:

🔹1 in 10 NHS doctors are from EU
🔹We are 11k doctors short
🔹Med school takes 5-6 years
🔹Junior doc training another 6-10
🔹Med school places have, already, just been increased by 25%
🔹So the first extra consultants *may* arrive in 2030

See the problem?
The final, most important fact is, of course, that Brexit will (indeed is, already) have a catastrophically destructive impact on the NHS.

Which is why the vast majority of NHS staff, the BMA, the RCN, the Royal Colleges etc are united in our unwavering opposition to Brexit.
Lastly, Darren, you & Farage imply you regard EU nurses & doctors as a necessary evil, an unwanted stop gap until “homegrown” NHS staff can replace them.

Well, they’re not. My magnificent EU colleagues are the heart & soul of the NHS. Vital. Irreplaceable.

So please, jog on.

1. This, from the govt, is astonishingly disingenuous.

2. Just before Christmas, @MattHancock sneaked out No Deal Brexit guidance *ordering* NHS staff to “reassure” patients (link below).

3. We shall do no such thing. We are doctors, not spin doctors, & we have grave concerns.
It disgusts me that @theresa_may is playing fast and loose with my patients’ lives by threatening a No Deal Brexit that we know would severely imperil the medicines supply chain.

Even @MattHancock has refused to rule out patient deaths in the event of No Deal.

Appalling.

@smthgsmthg @drjennings 2/? In 1967, a year before Enoch Powell's "Rivers of Blood" speech, Gallup asked people whether they though immigration had benefitted or harmed Britain. The twist? They asked the question twice, once about "Commonwealth immigration", once about "Irish immigration" 2/?
@smthgsmthg @drjennings Immigration from Ireland was much higher in this period than immigration from the Commonwealth, so if answers to this question were driven by "real concerns" about pressure from migration on jobs, housing, services, etc then negative views of Irish imms shld be higher 3/?

So now watching “Dark Water”, the first part of the two-part eighth season finale.

Clara is a fascinating companion, in large part because she’s essentially riffing on the sense of entitlement that Rose felt.
“He deserved better. And so did you.”
“I don't deserve anything. Nobody deserves anything.”
“But I am owed better. I am owed.”

Clara is selfish and self-centred. But she’s aware of that, and the show is aware of that.

These traits are explored as developed. They make her human.

Going to do a quick thread on some of the historical/political context to Powell and his speech, given all the controversy about Saturday's show on BBC R4 1/?
2/? Powell was not always anti-immigration. As Health Minister in the early 1960s he led drive to recruit Commonwealth imms into the NHS. Which means some of "Windrush generation" currently in conflict with the Home Office may be children of migrants recruited by Enoch Powell

Oh the joy to be waking up to the usual run-of-the-mill xenophobia about EU immigrants. This is from The @guardian. 1/
It is the usual drivel about freedom of movement being solely a benefit for the immigrant. Conveniently forgetting that EU immigrants (as well as non-EU immigrants) pay more in taxes than they take out. Meanwhile, the average British born citizen is a net cost to the taxes 2/
What exactly does it mean to have the "attitude of a tourist". Like many other immigrants, I work here full time, my kids go to school, I pay taxes, I help out in local communities. Before the Referendum I also thought I'd stay here indefinitely 3/

Clyde arrived at West Ham in 1968, the same year as Enoch Powell's 'rivers of blood' speech. He was the only - as far as I could see - visible black player in the league until Regis's emergence nine years later
I remember getting his autograph at Lime Street one Friday night in, maybe, 1972? When I met him, he didn't believe me. He laughed at my earnest attempts to convince him.
