Oh the joy to be waking up to the usual run-of-the-mill xenophobia about EU immigrants. This is from The @guardian. 1/
It is the usual drivel about freedom of movement being solely a benefit for the immigrant. Conveniently forgetting that EU immigrants (as well as non-EU immigrants) pay more in taxes than they take out. Meanwhile, the average British born citizen is a net cost to the taxes 2/
What exactly does it mean to have the "attitude of a tourist". Like many other immigrants, I work here full time, my kids go to school, I pay taxes, I help out in local communities. Before the Referendum I also thought I'd stay here indefinitely 3/
What are my rights as an immigrant? I can't vote here and we keep on being blamed for the lack of investment and infrastructure. Ironically, now by throwing our rights and the future up in the air, many people are reconsidering their commitment to this country 4/
Many of us are moving away. See e.g., here blog.politicsmeanspolitics.com/exit-pursued-b… - this is going to harm the British economy and yet... 5/
The UK government is probably going to try to stop free movement in 2019-2020 thus endangering a vital (for the UK) transitional period. And they'll seriously damage the UK economy by reducing migration in the long term. 6/
Which makes you think: why would they go through such lengths of self-harm to make sure free movement ends? My answer is: entitlement. They just can't digest the idea that people would be coming in here without being fingerprinted and subject to Home Office treatment 7/
No, they want us to be in a nice subservient position, they want us to curtsey and say "Thank you great British overlords for the privilege of working for you and keeping your NHS, fruit farms, hospitality, etc. afloat." They want us to know our place 8/
This is all it is about. This is not about migrants exerting pressure on the country. This is about the British sense of superiority. Recall, they took right to stay and settle here of millions of Commonwealth citizens away the moment these citizens came to the UK. 9/
As long as British went to commonwealth, free movement was great. Moment that Indians, Malaysians etc started coming to the UK it was "hey wait a minute, this is tearing society apart!" 10/
Just as a reminder, here is Enoch Powell's rivers of blood speech in all its racist glory 11/ telegraph.co.uk/comment/364382…
Notice this passage from Powell's speech and compare to the current rhetoric in Daily Express etc about immigrants coming from the EU
Another passage from Powell's speech about how horrible it is that these dark Commonwealth citizens have all those rights. The conservatives must be so relieved that at least EU immigrants have no right to vote 13/
(note though that even while UK was in the EU Cameron sought to curtail our rights, such as rights to benefits. Not because EU citizens disproportionately weigh on benefits - that's propaganda and false - but because they just don't want us to have these rights) 14/
Also look at this part of Powell's speech. Classic victim narrative of the native Brit who was supposedly oppressed by these Commonwealth citizens, unable to find a hospital bed or a school place. Familiar rhetoric? 15/
Enoch Powell's rivers of blood speech was racist drivel and recognized by the press as such. E.g., the Times said "This is the first time that a serious British politician has appealed to racial hatred in this direct way in our postwar history." 16/
Yet the same sort of rhetoric (UK citizens being foreigners in their own country, migration benefiting only the immigrants) is now totally acceptable. This is where we're at now. Dark times indeed ends
